Rule Book

1.0 General Terms

1.1 The Biennale of Fantasy Art is an exhibition of artworks that promote the painting of fiction, metaphysics, magical realism and surrealism, and are not older than two years. If the artwork is still older, the condition is that it has not been exhibited yet.

1.2 The organizer of the Biennale of Fantasy Art is The Mihajlović – Phoenix Foundation based in Belgrade, Kronštatska Street 5.

1.3. Artists of legal age from the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of Srpska, the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Montenegro can participate in the Biennale of Fantasy Art.

1.4 The organizer of the Biennale of Fantasy Art profiles the exhibition through a selection of works submitted to the competition. The organizer of the Biennale provides a number of participants with a direct invitation to the artist, without selection, in order to achieve a high quality exhibition.

1.5. The organizer organizes the Biennale of Fantasy Art every other year in the premises of the Ilija M. Kolarac Endowment in Belgrade, during which he publishes a catalog in electronic and printed versions. The official languages of the Biennale of Fantasy Art are Serbian and English.

1.6 After the end of the exhibition in Belgrade, the organizer organizes exhibitions in reputable galleries of other cities in Serbia. The Biennale of Fantasy Art will be organized in the Gallery of the Cultural Center in Novi Sad and Valjevo at the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

1.7 At the Biennale of Fantasy Art , by the decision of the Jury, the organizer awards the Grand Prix and a number of ransom awards, depending on the number of collectors interested in ransom.

1.8 The Biennale of Fantasy Art will also feature two commissions for the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Perspective Award.

1.9 In order to promote the exhibition and participants, the organizer has unlimited rights to reproduce works in various forms and media. If it is of a commercial nature, the income belongs to the organizer, which exclusively covers part of the costs of organizing the exhibition.

2.0 Registration of works for the first phase

2.1 For the first phase of selection, artists send photographs of works and completed application forms electronically.

2.2. Artists can submit a maximum of three works in a JPG file with a resolution of 2 MV and 300 DPI. Only works whose physical dimensions are between 50 cm and 140 cm (longer side) can be submitted. All traditional painting techniques are allowed (oil, acrylic, tempera, gouache, watercolor, pastel…)

2.3 The name of each file must include: file number, artist name, title, year of creation, painting technique and dimensions of the work (height before width).

2.4 Photographs of the works and the completed application form (application on the website www.bijenalefantastike.rs) must be sent to the address office@bijenalefantastike.rs by August 1, 2021 with a note in the title of the email: phase 1.

2.5 The list of selected authors will be published by the organizer on the website www.bijenalefantastike.com on August 10, 2021. The organizer has no obligation to explain the outcome of the selection to the rejected authors.

2.6 Artists whose works are selected for the second phase will be asked by e-mail to submit their original works.

2.7 Artists outside Serbia carry out the necessary temporary export procedure (ATA carnet) from their home countries. With the eventual absence of the procedure and the possible customs burden of the organizers, the conditions for technical rejection of works are met.

3.0 Submission of papers for the second phase of selection

3.1 Artists for the second phase of selection submit their original works by mail or in person to the address of the Biennale of Fantasy Art, Kronštatska Street 5, Belgrade, by September 10, 2021

3.2 Each work should be signed and available for sale, worth up to 3,000 euros. The work should be equipped for display and packed so that it cannot be damaged in transport. Damage or loss of work that occurs during transport is the sole responsibility of the sender.

3.3 Completed forms downloaded from the website of the Biennale of Fantasy Art, the authors are required to paste on the back of the works, to facilitate the identification of works.

3.4 The final selection of exhibitors will be announced on September 15 via e-mail and on the website of the Biennale of Fantasy Art, without the obligation of the organizers to explain the outcome of the selection to the rejected authors.

3.5 The exhibition of the Biennale of Fantasy Art will be held in the exhibition space of the Ilija Kolarac Endowment (Studentski trg, Belgrade) from October 18 to 31, 2021. The dates of the exhibitions in Novi Sad and Valjevo will be determined later.

4.0 Jury for the selection of works and awards

4.1 The organizer entrusts the selection of works and the selection of authors who deserve awards to the expert body (Jury) which independently makes decisions by harmonizing the views of all three members.

4.2 The organizer appoints the Jury of the Biennale of Fantasy Art, which consists of:

Katarina Zarić, Ph.D. Professor at the University of Arts, Belgrade

Dejan Đorić, art critic, Belgrade

Vojislav Jovanović, Director of Modern Gallery, Valjevo

4.3 The organizer also appoints two special Juries who will decide on the award for lifetime achievement as well as on the award for the best young author – Perspective.

4.4 The jury for the Lifetime Achievement Award consists of:

Nebojša Savković – Nes, academic sculptor,

Željko Đurović, academic painter,

Zvonimir Biro, collector.

4.5 Award for the best young author – ”Perspective” is 1000 euros and its assignment is decided by the Jury consisting of:

Dragan Jovanović – Danilov – art critic,

Mladen Filipović – collector,

Ivan Perić – collector.

4.6 The jury decides in its full composition. In case of absence of a member of the Jury, the organizer appoints a replacement from the ranks of professional and recognized individuals.

4.7 Decisions of the Jury are final and registered in the record signed by all members.

Tender procedure:

After the selection of works, the jury will make a shortlist of works and, if necessary, invite the author

to briefly present his work.

the tender procedure implies two levels of realization:

The first – review of applications and selection of works

The second – deciding on the award

The names of the award winners will be published no later than 15 days from the closing date of the competition on the website of the Biennale www.bijenalefantastike.rs

5.0 Awards

5.1 Grand Prix ransom award in the amount of up to 3,000 euros.

5.2 Equal ransom awards (maximum three) at the price stated by the author.

5.3 Award for the best young author – Perspective (up to 35 years), 1,000 euros.

5.4 All participants in the Biennale will compete for the awards that will be hand to the winners at the opening ceremony on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

5.5 The organizer will hand a lifetime achievement award to an artist whose work has contributed to the development and achievement of high values of fiction art, regardless of whether he participates in the exhibition.

5.6 Awards are subject to taxation and bank transfer costs borne by the buyer of the work.

6.0 Biennale of Fantasy Art Calendar

6.1 Application, selection; opening in Belgrade:

  • December 19, 2020 – August 1, 2021: open call, application for the first phase of selection
  • August 20, 2021: results of the first phase of selection
  • September 21, 2021: submission deadline for the second, final selection
  • September 22, 2021: results of the second, final selection and publication of the list of exhibition participants
  • October 18, 2021: Opening ceremony of the exhibition and award ceremony
  • October 18 – 31, 2021: the exhibition will be available to the public at the Ilija M. Kolarac Endowment
  • November 2 – 15, 2021: the exhibition will be available to the public in the Cultural Center of Novi Sad

6.2 The date of the exhibition in Valjevo will be determined later. In this regard, the dates of return and taking back of works will be announced to the participants later.

7.0 Final Terms

7.1 Exhibition participants present at the opening ceremony receive a copy of the printed catalog. An electronic catalog in high-resolution PDF format will be available on the Biennale of Fantasy Art website.

7.2 The sale of printed catalogs and promotional material is possible at exhibitions, through the site of the Biennale of Fantasy Art and the official Instagram / Facebook profile.

7.3 In case of interest in purchasing works, the organizer regulates relations with the authors in compliance with applicable regulations. Buyers take over the works after the end of the exhibition. The organizer is entitled to 15% of the sale of works.

7.4 It is not possible to withdraw works until the end of the exhibitions. The return of works, except for the awarded and sold ones, goes the same way as during the handover.

7.5 In case of extraordinary circumstances, it is possible to postpone the dates of the exhibitions.

7.6 Interpretation of the Rules is the sole responsibility of the organizers.

7.7 By signing the application form, the authors accept all the terms of the Rule Book.
